Go from a name to a public record
State medical boards keep public records of doctor licences and any action they have taken over problems with a doctor’s work.
The Federation of State Medical Boards gathers links to state doctor boards in its directory.
A state may use different doctor boards depending on the professional title. Ask which board holds your clinician’s record.
Open the state board directory- Get the clinician’s complete name along with their professional title.
- Choose the board for that profession and state.
- Match the record to the person you would see.
- Check the current licence status, then look for any board action against that doctor.
Boards differ in what they publish. The quality of a doctor’s care is not established by a record with no action against them.
Match permission to the visit location
As of September 2026, HHS guidance tied telehealth permission to the state where the patient was during the visit.
Telehealth is care provided remotely; HHS is the US Department of Health and Human Services.
If the clinician has a different professional title, ask which state board holds that profession’s record. Use that record for the check.
- Is this the person who would assess me?
- What permission do they hold to practise in my state?
- If the name or status does not match, can the service explain the difference?
