What the general federal rule covers
Blood testing was not a required step for every prescription under general federal prescribing law as of September 2026.
Your own care may still need tests. State rules, the checks needed for your health concern, or special rules for a medicine may require them.
Medical board guidance says the clinician must complete needed testing, arrange it, or refer the patient.
Get a reason, a reader, and a price
- What question would this test answer?
- How could the result change the plan?
- Who will explain it to me?
- Will I need an in-person examination too?
- Is testing included in the fee?
- Is the charge for a single test or a bundle, and what is in the bundle?
Ask for the names of the tests in writing. Keep the explanation beside the quote so you can compare the same things.
If the result leads to another step, ask who arranges it. Leave the conversation knowing where the result goes, not just where the blood is drawn.
Notes behind the answers

The general prescription rule does not make blood tests a step before every prescription. Ask the clinician why your own care does or does not need tests.
